Like any public company with a stock offering, General Motors is owned by shareholders. In the past, the U.S. government was a majority shareholder in the company (after the 2008 bailouts). However, in 2010 GM broke free from the government’s yoke and was reborn in its current incarnation.

Today, the top three individual GM shareholders are Mary Barra, Mark Reuss and Dan Ammann. Since, being top shareholders, these individuals “own” significant chunks of the company, let’s look at them each in-depth.

It may seem like a weird question, but did you ever wonder: How big is General Motors?

Mary Barra

Mary Barra is the CEO of General Motors; she was appointed to this position in January 2014. In January 2016, she was also elected chairman of the company’s board. Barra holds extensive experience in engineering and global product development.

As of her most recent filing with the SEC on February 15th, 2018, Mary Barra is General Motors’s largest individual shareholder, holding a grand total of 520,608 shares of GM.

Mark L. Reuss

Mark L. Reuss is the current Executive Vice President of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain at GM. He leads the program management of cars, trucks and crossovers globally. Mark is the son of Lloyd E. Reuss, who previously reigned as the eighteenth president of GM.

As of that previously-mentioned February 15th, 2018 SEC filing, Reuss claims the vaunted spot of second-largest individual GM shareholder with 203,934 shares in the company.

Don Ammann

Don Ammann is the current president of General Motors; he has held the position since January 2014. Before that, he enjoyed laboring as the company’s CFO and executive vice president. Ammann is experienced in the financial industry; in addition to his work at GM, Ammann dabbles in being the independent director of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.

As of the February 15th, 2018 SEC filing, Ammann is the third-largest GM shareholder. He holds 195,228 shares.

While, contrary to some rumors, China does not own GM, citizens of the country do enjoy Buick.
