2021 Chevy Tahoe “Baby Duramax” Diesel Engine Option

Some people out there prefer to burn diesel in their rides rather than traditional gasoline. Well, we won’t judge. Can this desire for diesel burning be satiated with a 2021 Chevy Tahoe? Does the 2021 Tahoe have a diesel engine option?

Yes, the 2021 Chevy Tahoe offers a turbodiesel 3.0-liter I6 LM2 Duramax engine on every trim level except the off-road oriented Z71. This engine was initially designed primarily for use in half-ton pickup trucks, being included in the 2019 Silverado and 2019 GMC Sierra. It’s unofficially, affectionately, known as “baby Duramax.”

The architecture of baby Duramax emphasizes reduced friction and smooth operation. This powerplant is delightfully quiet and buttery at all engine speeds, thanks in part to supporting elements such as a tuned air induction system and other noise-attenuating gizmos.

What other vehicles feature the baby Duramax diesel engine?

Besides the 2021 Tahoe, other vehicles that this turbodiesel I6 has been used in include the abovementioned 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2019 Chevy Silverado, along with the 2021 GMC Yukon, 2021 GMC Yukon XL, 2021 Cadillac Escalade, and 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV.

The 2021 Chevy Tahoe gets a standard 5.3-liter V8 L84 gas burning engine on the LS, LT, Z71, RST and Premier trim levels. This powerplant pumps out 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque.

The High Country trims come standard with a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 L87 engine. This machine manages to exhale 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The same 10-speed automatic transmission referenced above comes paired to both these engines.

It’s worth noting that the same engines are available for the 2021 Chevy Suburban. The Suburban and Tahoe remain very closely related brethren.
