Safety is a big deal for people looking to buy a new SUV in 2019, and rightly so. Many people on the market for an SUV want to be able to transport their family. This means safety on the road should be a top priority. If the SUV is lacking in great safety ratings, the coolest modern features and the best gas mileage mean absolutely nothing. You want to have peace of mind when you’re going back and forth from school, the office, vacations and extracurriculars. Both the 2019 GMC Acadia and the 2019 Toyota Highlander have similar safety ratings and features. Here is some information on both of these vehicles’ safety capabilities.

    The 2019 GMC Acadia

If you are in the market for a vehicle with plenty of additional safety features and great overall ratings, the 2019 GMC Acadia might be just what the doctor ordered. On AWD models of the Acadia, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave this vehicle an overall crash test rating of 5-stars. The FWD version doesn’t perform too shabbily either, coming in with an overall 4-star rating. If you’re not planning to drive in inclement weather like snow and ice, the FWD version of the Acadia is most likely adequate for your safety needs.

If you want to add on additional safety features, there are plenty available for the 2019 GMC Acadia, GMC really has a “go big or go home” mentality when it comes to their SUVs. Even if you opt for the very base model of the 2019 GMC Acadia, you’ll get safety features like a rearview camera and rear-seat alert standard. If you don’t know what rear-seat alert is, this is a feature created to alert you when you’ve forgotten something in the back seat. Hopefully you just left your groceries with a tub of ice cream, but regardless the Acadia will let you know that there’s something back there. Either way, the Acadia can save you from disaster with this alert.

Other active safety features include a rear cross traffic alert, front pedestrian braking, a safety alert driver’s seat, forward automatic braking, forward collision warning, front and rear parking sensors, side blind spot monitoring with lane change alert, lane keep assist, and a surround-view camera. If you have a teen in the house who is learning how to drive, you might find GM’s Teen Driver feature extremely useful. This additional feature allows parents to set speed and audio limits as well as monitor their teen’s trip statistics. This helps parents teach their kids good driving habits that will keep teens safer on the road for years to come.

    The 2019 Toyota Highlander

The 2019 Toyota Highlander, like the 2019 GMC Acadia has great safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. • Style and Features

The luxurious interior if a 2019 GMC Acadia Denali

Just because you’re looking for a vehicle to haul your family and friends around doesn’t mean you should have to compromise on style, inside and out. You’re most likely going to spend a lot of time in your new SUV, so it should be comfortable and have lots of features like infotainment, navigation, and cargo space. You also don’t need to compromise on the exterior of your new SUV and drive around something that looks like a mom-mobile. Maybe you are planning on picking up the kids from soccer in your new SUV, but still...

    The 2019 GMC Acadia

On the outside, the 2019 GMC Acadia comes in a classic array of mature hues including Dark Sky Metallic and Red Quartz Tintcoat. The exterior combines modern and classic style to be a jaw-dropper on the road. Its distinctive GMC grille design is immediately recognizable no matter where the road takes you.

This SUV comes standard with seating for up to 7 people in a 3-row configuration. You can also elect for seating up to 5 people in the 2-row configuration if you don’t need the additional space. Being able to customize the number of seats inside the Acadia helps families get the perfect SUV for their needs as well as save on gas mileage. On the inside, the 2019 GMC Acadia feels upscale and sophisticated with its quiet interior and use of soft-touch materials in your choice of two-color tones. The Acadia also offers a decent amount of cargo space so that you can haul luggage, groceries, sporting equipment or anything else you need to transport along with your family. There are 13 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third-row seats which expands to a maximum of 79 cubic feet with the seats down!

If you’re worried about staying entertained while on the road, don’t be. The 2019 GMC Acadia comes standard with an IntelliLink infotainment system, a 7-inch touch screen, a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio, five USB ports, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Whew! That’s a lot of standard entertainment and convenience features!

    The 2019 Toyota Highlander

On the outside, the 2019 Toyota Highlander is certainly a serviceable vehicle. You’ll get where you need to go, but you probably won’t be turning any heads while you do it. The exterior looks like, well, an SUV. The base model of the Toyota Highlander definitely didn’t go into stylish details on the outside. Inside the Highlander is a slightly different story, you’ll find plenty of soft-touch points and some amount of leather trim. The Highlander has a smidgen more cargo space than the Acadia, with 13.8 cubic feet of cargo space available behind the back seats. By folding down the seats, you’ll create a maximum of 83.7 cubic feet of space. Remember, the 2019 Toyota Highlander only comes in 7 or 8-person seating, so if you’re looking for an SUV that’s a bit more streamlined for your family, this may not be it.

Inside the 2019 Toyota Highlander, you’ll find many of the same features included with the 2019 GMC Acadia. These include an infotainment system called GreenEdge, 8-inch touchscreen, and either a smartphone linked or built-in navigation system. You can also opt for a rear-seat entertainment system to keep kids entertained on longer road trips.

  • Performance

A black 2019 GMC Acadia All Terrain in the woods

The performance of an SUV is a combination of fuel efficiency, horsepower, and handling while on the road. Here’s a look at the performance of the 2019 GMC Acadia and the 2019 Toyota Highlander.

    The 2019 GMC Acadia

Gas mileage isn’t an issue for the 2019 GMC Acadia. In fact, you’ll get some of the best fuel efficiency ratings for its class with the Acadia! Few of its competitors can match the 21 MPG city and 26 MPG highway with the base engine. If you upgrade to the more powerful V6 engine, your fuel efficiency will only go down slightly, reaching up to 17 MPG city and 25 MPG highway, which is still quite high compared with other SUVs of its class.

There are two powertrains to choose from if you opt for a new GMC Acadia in 2019. The base engine is a 193-horsepower four-cylinder engine while the more powerful option is the 310-horsepower V6 engine. For most people, the base engine meets their needs fine, but the V6 engine will give you significantly more power when towing. Even though the Acadia is quite a large vehicle, it maneuvers surprisingly well in confined areas and is very comfortable on rough roads.

    The 2019 Toyota Highlander

Gas mileage for the 2019 Toyota Highlander is decent, but not quite up to the 2019 GMC Acadia’s standard. You’ll get up to 20 city and 24 highway with the base model. The engine is slightly larger than the Acadia however, with a base model coming standard with a 2.7L inline 4-cylinder engine. For some reason, this larger engine offers less horsepower than the Acadia, providing only 185 horsepower compared with the Acadia’s 193 base. You can upgrade to a more powerful engine with the Highlander though. With an upgrade, you’ll get a 3.5-liter V6 engine which accelerates with ease, even with a full crew in the cabin. This engine provides 295 horsepower, which is still not quite as much as the Acadia’s upgradable engine option. The Highlander will give you a smooth ride on the road though and is noted for its comfortable, quiet ride. The 2019 Toyota Highlander is both surefooted and stable, and can make a decent choice for those with large families.
