The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado is a legend in the world of full-sized pickup trucks. From its start as a trim level namesake in 1975, it finally made a name of its own in 1998 as its very own pickup and has been a fan favorite ever since. Then, in 1999, the Toyota Tundra made its appearance, and the battle began.
When comparing the 2018 Chevy Silverado vs. 2018 Toyota Tundra you want the fight to be fair, but in this case, the winner seems clear from the specs alone. The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado is more affordable starting at only $28,300 compared to the 2018 Toyota Tundra’s MSRP of $31,120. The 2018 Silverado also has a better towing capacity and better fuel efficiency, while being much easier to handle. To top it all off, the 2018 Silverado also offers a much more comfortable interior design and is overall safer to drive. Basically, the only thing the 2018 Toyota Tundra has over the Silverado is its horsepower of the standard engine.

Saying these two are evenly matched would not be truthful, but that doesn’t mean they both aren’t impressive models in their own right. Sadly, most people can’t afford to have these two massive trucks in their life. So, if you can only choose one, you shouldn’t go for the gold, go for the Silverado.

  • Safety

    2018 Chevrolet Silverado

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado received an impressive five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). On top of that it also received four “Good” scores, the best you can receive, from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when it came to safety testing. This means that in certified testing the 2018 Silverado passed with flying colors, and is one of the safest pickup trucks you can drive.
The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado also has a long list of standard safety equipment including a rearview camera for those pesky parking and pulling out situations, and teen driver technology so that you can keep track of everything your new driver is doing. There are plenty of even more useful safety options available as well such as forward collision warning, parking sensors, and automatic forward braking.

2018 Toyota Tundra

The 2018 Toyota Tundra received four out of five stars from the NHTSA and only three “Good” scores from the “IIHS.” As far as standard safety features go, it also offers a rearview camera and the Toyota’s Safety Sense technology suite which offers a few handy tools such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and pedestrian detection. If you want to upgrade there is also parking assist, and rear cross-traffic alert systems for a small fee more.

  • Performance

    2018 Chevrolet Silverado

When it comes to performance, the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado is up there with some of the best pickup trucks in history.
With three brilliant engine options, the power is yours to decide. The engine options include a 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 engine as the standard, a 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine with optional eAsseist, and a 6.2L Ecotec3 V8 for those who really want some muscle in their rig. The horsepower ranges anywhere from 285 to 420, and you can get from 305 to 460 lb-ft of torque. All that power will lead you to a grand total of 12,500 pounds of towing capacity when properly equipped.
The power alone would lead many to admire its brilliance, but it also handles and maneuvers with flawless care. Even with the massive towing load, it can handle, the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado was built to handle it with efficient maneuverability around every corner. This may be a full-size pickup truck, but it knows exactly when to use a delicate touch to increase its overall capability. Additionally, when compared to the 2018 Toyota Tundra it is the more fuel-efficient options with 23 mpg highway.

    2018 Toyota Tundra

The 2018 Toyota Tundra can certainly lift its share of the load with a towing capacity of 10,200 pounds, but when placed side by side with the 2018 Silverado it can come off as a bit disappointing when it can handle nearly 1,000 pounds less on average.
When it comes to engines there are two actual engines, but four overall options. The standard is a 4.6L V8 engine in either 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive that offers 310 hp and 327 lb-ft of torque. This is one spot the 2018 Toyota Tundra has the advantage over the 2018 Silverado by having a standard engine with more power; sadly though the increased cost also reflects that increase in power. The next level up is a 5.1L V8 engine with 4WD that offers 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. This 5.1L V8 engine also offers optional flex-fuel capability. Every engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
As for the way the 2018 Tundra handles itself, at lower speeds, the light steering can be a blessing, but at high speeds, some may find it a bit sluggish. Also, the turning is not as clean or precise as the 2018 Silverado. The fuel efficiency also falls a bit short at a max of 19 mpg highway, which isn’t the worst, but it still doesn’t compare well to the Silverado’s 23 mpg highway.

  • Interior

    2018 Chevrolet Silverado

The interior of the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado is ergonomic in every meaning of the word. It is both quiet and designed in a way that makes it easy to navigate. The higher up on the trim ladder you go, the more comfortable you will feel. Basically, you won’t find a smoother ride in a pickup truck anywhere.
The features for the interior are entertaining, convenient, and easy to use. Chevrolet’s signature MyLink infotainment system with a standard 7-inch touch display will give you Bluetooth with an instant connection to your Apple or Android smartphone. This allows you to make hands free calls and texts as well as play all your favorite music for the ride.
The cabin isn’t the only thing about the design of the Silverado that makes it a star. Although both the 2018 Silverado and 2018 Tundra offer the same bed size options of 5.5ft., 6.5 ft., or 8ft., the Silverado does a much better job at making its bed easy to utilize. The rear bumper offers a convenient step for climbing right on in, while the EZ-lift and lower tailgate make for a smooth open and close.

    2018 Toyota Tundra

A downside to the interior of the 2018 Toyota Tundra is that it is not nearly as soundproof as the 2018 Silverado. The interior is still comfortable, but it can be more difficult to enjoy that comfort with the roaring sound of the road entering the seclusion of the cabin.
The interior features of the 2018 Tundra are not too far from the level of the 2018 Silverado, but it does have a fair amount of faults. Whereas the Silverado has its MyLink technology, Toyota offers its own Entune infotainment system, but instead of a standard 7-inch touchscreen it only offers a 6.1-inch touchscreen. Toyota Entune is extremely easy to use, but a huge downfall is that it doesn’t offer smartphone connectivity which will be a major disappointment to anyone who loves their tech, and who doesn’t?
